Halloween Already?

Monday, August 31st, 2009

I bet you haven’t started thinking about the holiday season, but unfortunately it is about to start creeping up on us again. The first one coming up in the marathon of events is Halloween. The thought of little witches and goblins running around with bags of candy is exciting, but the preparation is not. Start now by planning and ordering the necessary supplies now to guarantee a successful holiday themed campaign for your small business or for a fun holiday event for your family. Here are 10 tips for success:

  1. Make a list of all the supplies needed for Halloween (costumes, decorations, pumpkins, candy, invitations, etc.).
  2. Decorate your office and/or house. If they are not organized this year, then plan ahead for an organized space to put them away.
  3. Find Festive Ideas by surfing the web or your local newspaper for themed events such as apple picking or hay rides. If planning for your business, then think of ways your business can help others during the Halloween season or set up some of these same events for your employees.
  4. Pick a Date for the Event.
  5. Organize a Halloween Party.
  6. Order invitations and flyers for the attendees. Vistaprintdeals.com offers great deals on invitations and they have premade Halloween themed templates, so you don’t have to do any of the work!  Here is a coupon for 50% off anything on the website.
  7. Send out the invitations and set up the RSVP list. Make sure to do this early, so people can mark it on their calendars!
  8. Buy treats and organize them into treat bags for easy handout.
  9. Get ready for the parties by setting up the decorations, treat bags, and any refreshments the week of Oct. 31st rather than that day!
  10. Enjoy the holiday!

Business Card Etiquette

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

Everyone has been in the situation before at a networking event when the annoying guy who just won’t seem to leave you alone pulls out his business card and you really don’t want to give him yours,  but what is the business etiquette? Unfortunately, you are obligated to give him your business card once he presents his, but what most business people don’t realize is that you are suppose to make the card exchange an act of respect, meaning that you should never force your card on someone and should always ask permission first. According to the State Department, business card exchange in other countries is very different from the United States, so make sure that you are aware of culture practices before committing a “social no-no”.  Here is a quick list of important rules to remember:

  1. Never present your card during a meal.
  2. Present your card to everyone in a group to make sure that you are not snubbing any of them.
  3. Always give your card out at the beginning of an exchange or meeting.
  4. Always present it personally, never in a letter or a card (especially not with flowers).
  5. If you run out of cards and someone asks you for one, then do not write it on the back of one of theirs, but instead write your information on a clean piece of paper and then mail them a card.

Another aspect to keep in mind when ordering business cards is how does this card portray you/your business? Make sure that you keep it simple and clean, no flowers or cutsy pictures. Also, using the back side of the card is a great way to portray additional information about your company. It might cost a couple of extra dollars, but is worth it to stand out from the crowd. A key feature of the double sided business card is if you do business in multiple countries having the primary language on the front and a second or third language on the back can definitely come in handy.
