How Can Business Cards Help You Network More Effectively?
Wednesday, September 9th, 2009Business cards are one of the most useful and basic forms of marketing, whether it be for yourself or your company. Their small size and to the point information make them a convenient and effective way of distributing your information and qualifications to prospective employers and people of influence. Carrying business cards habitually will aid in networking and hopefully provide occupational success. Maximize your options by taking business cards with you wherever you may go and take initiative by attending job fair and business conferences. Generously distribute your business cards to ensure that someone in a position to hire or help you obtains one.
Further, feel free to suggest referring your services to others that could benefit from your skills. But, be sure to exercise proper etiquette (see our previous blog post). Each time you give someone a business card of your, be sure to request one in return. Use the card to initiate conversation and take notes that will help you to follow up with the individual you obtained it from. Feel free to promote yourself and vigorously follow-up with employers and interviewers, remember that patience and persistence will pay off in the long run, just as long as you maintain a positive attitude. Self-promotion via business cards is one of the simplest and most effective forms of networking and should be regularly practiced via distribution by those hunting for employment of additional business options.
Business Card Etiquette
Saturday, August 29th, 2009Everyone has been in the situation before at a networking event when the annoying guy who just won’t seem to leave you alone pulls out his business card and you really don’t want to give him yours, but what is the business etiquette? Unfortunately, you are obligated to give him your business card once he presents his, but what most business people don’t realize is that you are suppose to make the card exchange an act of respect, meaning that you should never force your card on someone and should always ask permission first. According to the State Department, business card exchange in other countries is very different from the United States, so make sure that you are aware of culture practices before committing a “social no-no”. Here is a quick list of important rules to remember:
- Never present your card during a meal.
- Present your card to everyone in a group to make sure that you are not snubbing any of them.
- Always give your card out at the beginning of an exchange or meeting.
- Always present it personally, never in a letter or a card (especially not with flowers).
- If you run out of cards and someone asks you for one, then do not write it on the back of one of theirs, but instead write your information on a clean piece of paper and then mail them a card.
Another aspect to keep in mind when ordering business cards is how does this card portray you/your business? Make sure that you keep it simple and clean, no flowers or cutsy pictures. Also, using the back side of the card is a great way to portray additional information about your company. It might cost a couple of extra dollars, but is worth it to stand out from the crowd. A key feature of the double sided business card is if you do business in multiple countries having the primary language on the front and a second or third language on the back can definitely come in handy.
